The most effective strategy is to sow phacelia in waves with an interval of 2–3 weeks. This allows you to “catch” the nectar flow when the previous wave has already finished blooming. Here are the optimal sowing windows.

Spring Start (April — Early May)

This is the best time for the first sowing in most regions of Ukraine. You can sow phacelia as early as mid-April, as soon as the soil allows cultivation. Flowering will begin in June, providing bees with food after the orchards finish blooming but before the mass flowering of buckwheat or sunflower. In the Steppe zone, you can sow even earlier — as early as March — but only if there is sufficient soil moisture.

Summer Conveyor (June — July)

This is the “golden window” for maximum honey harvest. Sowing in June–July results in flowering in July–August, filling the hottest and most challenging period for bees, when many other honey plants stop secreting nectar due to heat. If you want to get nectar flow in early August, sow the seeds in early July.

Autumn Nectar Flow (August)

Sowing in August provides flowering in September–October. This is a critically important period for building up bee colony strength before winter. Late-sown phacelia works even in cloudy and cool weather, when other honey plants no longer secrete nectar. That is why it is the most reliable crop for autumn bee feeding.

Pre-Winter Sowing (October — November)

This method is used to obtain an ultra-early nectar flow the following year. Seeds are sown before winter so they undergo natural stratification. Seedlings appear immediately after snowmelt, and by June phacelia blooms, providing bees with food during the most critical period of brood rearing.

Key Conditions for Maximum Honey Harvest

To get the maximum result from phacelia, it is not enough to simply choose the right sowing date. It is important to follow several agronomic conditions.

  • Soil moisture: phacelia requires sufficient moisture for germination. In dry conditions, increase the seeding rate and sow early or before expected rains.
  • Seeding rate: for continuous sowing, 8–10 kg/ha is recommended. For an apiary, it is sufficient to sow small plots near the hives, alternating sowing dates for continuous flowering.
  • Sowing depth: phacelia seeds are small, so sowing depth should not exceed 1.5–2 cm. Rolling after sowing is essential for better seed-to-soil contact.
  • Location: sow phacelia in strips or plots near the apiary, within the bees’ productive flight radius. This reduces energy costs for finding food and increases nectar flow efficiency.
  • Combination with other crops: phacelia works excellently in mixtures with buckwheat, sweet clover, and other honey plants, providing comprehensive nectar flow throughout the season.
