Winter Mustard as Green Manure and Oilseed Crop: Benefits of Autumn Sowing and Growing Technique

Winter mustard is a versatile crop that combines the functions of green manure and a valuable oilseed plant. Thanks to its powerful root system and rapid green mass growth, it improves soil health, enriches it with organic matter, and suppresses pest development. Let us examine in detail why autumn sowing of mustard is becoming a mandatory element of modern crop rotation.

Winter Mustard Seeds: Botanical Features and Crop Requirements

Winter mustard belongs to the Brassicaceae family and is distinguished by its cold hardiness: seedlings withstand frosts down to minus 5–7 °C, and mature plants down to minus 10 °C. The growing season lasts 90–110 days depending on the region and sowing dates.

The mustard root system penetrates to a depth of 1.5 m, loosening the subsoil layer and improving the soil’s water-air regime. The plant forms a branched stem 60–120 cm tall with a powerful leaf mass that decomposes quickly after incorporation.

For sowing, conditioned winter mustard seed with germination of at least 85% and purity of 98% is used. The small seeds require careful levelling of the seedbed — this is one of the main conditions for uniform emergence. Quality material can be purchased from a reliable supplier that provides a full package of certificates.

Phytosanitary Role of Winter Mustard in Soil Recovery

Mustard has a pronounced phytosanitary effect, which is due to its content of glucosinolates — natural compounds that, upon decomposition, form substances with bactericidal and fungicidal properties. This is why it is often sown as a natural field “sanitiser”.

The main soil recovery effects:

  • suppression of potato scab and root rot pathogens;
  • reduction of wireworm and cockchafer larvae populations;
  • nematode suppression through the release of specific metabolites;
  • reduced infection of subsequent crops with fusarium and rhizoctonia.

The effect on wireworm — one of the most dangerous pests for potatoes and beets — deserves special mention. Mustard root exudates create a soil environment unsuitable for the development of click beetle larvae, allowing the pesticide load to be reduced by 30–40%.

Nitrogen and Organic Matter Accumulation: Mustard as Green Manure

As green manure, mustard accumulates 15–20 t/ha of green mass, equivalent to applying 40–60 kg/ha of nitrogen in organic form. Root residues add another 3–4 t/ha of organic matter, gradually transforming into humus.

After incorporation, the biomass mineralises quickly due to its narrow C:N ratio (12–15:1), so nutrients become available to the next crop within 3–4 weeks. This is particularly important for farms growing vegetable crops and potatoes.

To enhance green manuring efficiency, mustard is often sown in mixtures with other crops. Green manure in mono- and mixed sowings allows different soil needs to be met: loosening, nitrogen fixation and erosion protection. It is also worth considering green manure mixtures — ready-made kits selected for specific agronomic tasks.

Winter Mustard Growing Technique: Dates, Rates, Tillage

The optimal sowing dates for winter mustard are from 20 August to 10 September. Early sowings allow plants to form a powerful rosette before the cold sets in, while late sowings reduce the risk of overgrowth and disease infection.

The sowing rate is 8–12 kg/ha for green manure purposes and 6–8 kg/ha for oilseed. The incorporation depth is 1.5–2.5 cm, and the sowing method is continuous drilling. The soil is tilled before sowing to a depth of 4–6 cm with mandatory rolling to improve seed-soil contact.

Crop care is minimal: if necessary, one harrowing is carried out to destroy weeds in the early stages. At the budding stage, green manure mustard is incorporated into the soil with disc implements to a depth of 8–12 cm. Oilseed sowings are left until the seeds fully ripen.

Buying Winter Mustard: Price and Ordering Terms at SAP Lutsk

The price of mustard seeds depends on the batch volume, reproduction and payment terms. Wholesale orders are traditionally cheaper than retail, and with prepayment we fix the cost for the entire volume.

SAP Lutsk offers:

  1. winter mustard seeds wholesale and retail from a direct importer;
  2. conditioned material with laboratory germination from 85%;
  3. seed delivery across the entire territory of Ukraine;
  4. consultations on sowing dates and sowing rates for your region.

In addition to mustard, we offer wholesale seeds from the importer and producer for the full range of green manure and oilseed crops. Order seeds in advance — the optimal dates for autumn mustard sowing fall in late August.

Winter Mustard for Sowing: Final Advantages of the Crop

Winter mustard is a combination of economy and agronomic efficiency. It allows several tasks to be solved simultaneously: improving soil health, enriching it with organic matter, reducing protection costs for subsequent crops, and obtaining an additional oilseed harvest.

With minimal costs for seeds and care, mustard provides a multiplier effect in crop rotation that is hard to overestimate. This is why more and more Ukrainian farms are including this crop in their autumn sowing plans — as a reliable tool for restoring soil fertility.
