Best Winter Green Manures: What to Sow in Autumn to Restore Soil Fertility

Autumn sowing of green manures is the most affordable way to restore soil fertility without significant fertiliser costs. Winter green manures manage to form a powerful root system before the cold sets in, protect the soil from erosion in winter, and regrow quickly in spring. Let us examine which crops are best suited for autumn sowing and how to properly incorporate them into the soil.

Winter Green Manures: Why Autumn Sowing Is More Effective Than Spring

Winter green manures have a number of advantages over their spring counterparts. They use autumn moisture to form biomass, protect the soil from nutrient leaching during winter precipitation, and suppress weeds long before spring field work begins.

The root system of winter green manures continues to work even at low temperatures, loosening compacted horizons and creating channels for water and air. In spring, such soil warms up faster and requires less pre-sowing tillage.

In addition, winter green manures provide a mulching effect: their above-ground mass covers the soil, reducing moisture evaporation and protecting the surface from wind and water erosion. This is why more and more farms are choosing green manure for winter as a basic element of soil-protective technology.

Comparison of Winter Green Manures: Mustard, Rye, Rapeseed and Vetch

Each crop has its strengths and is suited to specific agronomic tasks. Let us compare the four most popular winter green manures by key indicators.

Winter Mustard

The fastest green manure in terms of biomass growth — 15–20 t/ha of green mass in 6–8 weeks. Pronounced phytosanitary effect against wireworm, scab and nematodes. Demanding of moisture, poor tolerance of waterlogging and acidic soils. Ideal for sowing after cereals and before potatoes.

Winter Rye

The hardiest green manure, capable of growing on poor sandy and acidic soils. Its powerful root system penetrates to a depth of 1.5 m, loosening the compacted subsoil layer. Accumulates 4–6 t/ha of root residues. An important nuance: rye suppresses the growth of subsequent crops through allelopathic exudates, so it must be incorporated early.

Winter Rapeseed

A valuable green manure for fields infested with weeds: it quickly forms a dense stand and shades out weeds. The root system releases organic acids that convert phosphorus and potassium into available forms. The drawback — it is vulnerable to crucifer flea beetles and requires careful protection in the early stages.

Winter Vetch

The only one of the four crops that fixes atmospheric nitrogen with the help of nodule bacteria. It accumulates 60–80 kg/ha of biological nitrogen and forms a branched root system. Vetch is less cold-hardy than rye, so it is more often sown in mixtures with cereal crops to increase winter hardiness.

For maximum effect, we recommend using green manure mixtures — they combine the advantages of several crops and provide a comprehensive effect on the soil.

Winter Green Manure Seeds: Sowing Rates and Sowing Dates

The sowing dates for winter green manures depend on the crop and the region. Mustard is sown from 20 August to 10 September, rapeseed — from 15 August to 5 September, rye — from 1 to 25 September, vetch — from 20 August to 10 September.

Approximate sowing rates for green manure purposes:

  • winter mustard — 8–12 kg/ha;
  • winter rye — 80–120 kg/ha;
  • winter rapeseed — 6–10 kg/ha;
  • winter vetch — 60–80 kg/ha.

The incorporation depth depends on seed size: small mustard and rapeseed seeds are sown at 1.5–2.5 cm, rye and vetch — at 3–5 cm. The soil is tilled before sowing to a depth of 4–6 cm with mandatory rolling.

Conditioned winter green manure seeds can be purchased from SAP Lutsk. We offer green manure wholesale and retail with a full package of certificates and delivery across Ukraine.

How to Properly Incorporate Green Manures into the Soil in Spring

The main rule for incorporating green manures is not to be late. The optimal moment comes when the plants reach a height of 20–30 cm, but the stems are still juicy and soft. Overgrown plants become coarse, decompose slowly, and can acidify the soil.

The incorporation technology includes the following steps:

  1. Mowing or cutting the green mass with disc implements to a depth of 8–12 cm.
  2. Shredding plant residues to accelerate mineralisation.
  3. Incorporating the biomass into the topsoil to a depth of 10–15 cm.
  4. Rolling the surface to preserve moisture and ensure contact between residues and soil.

On light soils, discing is sufficient; on heavy soils, ploughing or chiselling is advisable. If the green manure was grown over winter, in spring it is incorporated 2–3 weeks before sowing the main crop so that the biomass has time to mineralise.

Do not incorporate green manures too deeply: in the lower layers, without oxygen access, decomposition slows down, organic acids form, and they suppress the following crop. The optimal depth is 10–15 cm for most winter green manures.

Green Manure in Autumn: Final Recommendations for Farms

Autumn sowing of green manures is an investment in soil fertility that pays off as early as the next season. The choice of crop should be based on soil type, preceding crop, and the purpose of cultivation: for rapid biomass — mustard, for deep loosening — rye, for nitrogen fixation — vetch, for weed control — rapeseed.

By combining crops and following the incorporation technology, you will achieve a lasting soil restoration effect over several seasons. And quality seeds from a reliable supplier are the guarantee that every investment in green manuring will bring the expected result.
