Meadow timothy grass is a perennial grass that belongs to the Meadow grass family. It belongs to the most common and valuable crops, which are of great interest to farmers due to their good fodder characteristics.
It has an elastic and well-developed root system, which can reach one meter in depth. The inflorescences are cylindrical, the fruits are an oval or rounded caryopsis. The culture propagates by seeds or tillering shoots. In addition to being used for fodder purposes, meadow timothy grass is used for landscaping areas, due to its aesthetics, ease of care, and resistance to temperature extremes.
Meadow timothy grass: general description
Timofeyevka can be found in different countries of the world, because it adapts quite well to different climatic conditions. The only exceptions are deserts and arctic climates where grass is unable to grow.
Only 11 varieties of this culture are found in nature. Here is a general description of timothy grass:
- The root system is fibrous. It can reach a depth of up to one meter, due to which the plant helps to strengthen the soil and can be used in land reclamation (measures to prevent land degradation and restore their fertility). Ceilings are cylindrical with a thickness of 1-3 mm. Height – from 25 to 150 cm. After the end of the growing season, the stems die off. The leaves are elongated, oval. Length – from 6 to 40 cm, sheet width – 3-8 mm. The surface is rough.
- The inflorescence has the form of a spike-shaped panicle (length – about 10 cm).
- The flowering period begins in early summer for 4-7 days.
Of the total mass of the plant, about 65% are leaves, from which various agricultural feeds are produced with a high content of carotene and vitamin C. It is characterized by a high protein content – up to 14% in green mass and up to 8% in hay.
Timofeevka refers to perennial crops, which are characterized by slow growth. The maximum yield is reached 3-4 years after sowing. When sowing a plot for pasture, this grass grows 3-4 times during the summer.
Where does it grow?
If we talk about where timothy grows, we can say with confidence that this culture is found almost everywhere. She is growing:
- among fields;
- on roadsides;
- in flooded and dry meadows;
- in steppes and fields;
- on mountain slopes;
- in forest clearings.
On the territory of Ukraine it is found in the regions of the Caucasus Mountains, the ladder and forest-steppe zone. It can also be found in other European countries, as well as in America, Australia, etc.
Used as part of fodder and lawn grass
Meadow timothy grass, first of all, is valuable as a fodder crop, due to the high volume and quality of green mass. Suitable for feeding cattle, small cattle, rabbits, etc. It is characterized by a high content of protein and useful trace elements, but keep in mind that only young grass is suitable for feeding (the old one becomes tougher, so animals refuse it).
In addition, meadow timothy grass is quite often used in landscape design for landscaping a site. This is explained by the fact that this grass meets all the basic requirements for the culture used for landscaping the territory:
- resistance to low temperatures;
- decorative appeal;
- ability to grow and develop on poor soils;
- the plant does not adversely affect which grass grows nearby;
- long lifespan.
Timothy grass is actively used as part of lawn grass mixtures (together with ryegrass, fescue and bluegrass). The grass normally tolerates frosts, while maintaining a rich green color. But keep in mind that the culture does not tolerate a long absence of moisture, so it can die in conditions of prolonged drought.
Meadow timothy grass does not recover well after a short haircut, and it does not tolerate strong trampling, therefore it is not suitable for arranging a sports lawn, which implies an active load. The ideal option is the organization of universal-purpose lawn coverings for decorating a private house adjoining territory and park areas.
Peculiarities of sowing
Timothy grass grows normally on different types of soil, but it feels most comfortable on alluvial soils, clayey and loamy, as well as drained peatlands.
Seeds begin to grow already at +2 degrees Celsius (the optimum temperature is from +18 to +20 degrees Celsius). The seeds of the plant are quite small, therefore, before sowing, the territory must be properly prepared: it is cleaned of contaminants.rnyakov and cultivate, level, and also make nitrogen fertilizers. Sowing seeds can be done in spring (April) or autumn.
Note that the edge of the lawn needs more seed than the rest of the area. The average consumption is 40-60 g per 1 m2 (as part of a grass mixture – 4-6 kg per 1 ha). In autumn, it is recommended to plant the lawn before November, so that the plant has time to sprout before the cold weather.
To obtain a saturated green lawn, in addition to following the recommendations for sowing and care, it is important to use high-quality seed.
SMART AGRO PLUS LLC is a leading company in the field of seed sales, we have Timothy grass seeds that meet the high requirements of GOST. This crop is actively used for sowing meadow lawns for roadside and urban gardening, as well as land reclamation.
When sowing, keep in mind that this culture is very fond of well-lit areas, as well as a lot of moisture. Therefore, it is important to ensure regular watering of the lawn, especially in the absence of natural precipitation.
